A big part of university life is living away from home. It can be a huge step and it’s important to make sure that you’re properly prepared, especially if this is your first time at uni. There are many things you’ll need to take with you, but it’s easy to go overboard and end up taking more than is necessary. It is a good idea to make an inventory of everything you’re going to take, so that there are no surprises on move in day.

Before starting to pack, you should check what’s provided by your accommodation. Most universities offer furniture such as a bed and mattress, as well as a desk and chair. It’s also worth checking the rules of your student hall, as some have restrictions on what you can bring. This is particularly true of electrical items, and it’s best to keep this in mind when buying anything.

When deciding what to take, remember that you’re moving into a small room with limited cupboard and storage space. It’s not worth spending a fortune on stuff that you might not use. For example, a clothes dryer will be an unnecessary expense if your accommodation has on-site laundry facilities. A plate set and some bowls are a better choice for making your own for making your own food in the kitchen. Similarly, a toaster isn’t essential when most universities provide them.

It’s a good idea to pack a first aid kit, as you never know when you might need it. You should include cold and flu tablets or sachets, paracetamol, plasters, tweezers and antiseptic wipes. It’s also a good idea to have some toiletries, such as toothpaste, shampoo and conditioner, as well as some cleaning products for your shower and kitchen.

You should also take a photo ID and a credit or debit card, and it’s a good idea to have some cash with you too, just in case. It’s also a good idea for students to take out content insurance, which is inexpensive and can provide peace of mind in the event that something gets stolen or damaged. You can buy student contents insurance online, or it may be included in your student loan. If you’re unsure, it’s best to ask your parents or guardians about this before making a decision. It’s a good idea to get a quote from a number of different providers, so that you can make an informed decision.
