The current thinking is that we have too many clothes. The term fast fashion has been termed to explain the trend for clothes that we shall just wear once and then never again. The days of making do and mending are long gone. Fast fashion, like the fast food that it is named after, is all about instant gratification but does us no good in the long run. Environmentally the cost to the Earth is huge. The need for arable farmland converted to cotton growing is tremendous, shipping the clothes, all made in the Far East, is a massive drain on resources and means even more fossil fuels are being used to move it.
All the more reason to think about creating something called a capsule wardrobe. This is where you have a core of clothes that you can call upon everyday as a standard outfit. You may still need to splash out on something new now and again but essentially you can see the benefit of the capsule wardrobe in terms of space and your own washing as well.
What do you put in a capsule wardrobe? First you should begin with shoes. You should limit yourself to just three. One formal, one pair of sports trainers and one pair of boots. You can rotate these quite easily for any social setting that you may have. If you need an informal shoe like a loafer or deck shoe it is ok to have one of those.
Next we move on to shirts. You only need to have 6 of these. 3 for formal work wear, two short sleeved for summer wear and one for special occasions. This may not seem like a lot of choice but it will suffice for a good long while. Make sure you wear these items until they are practically worn through. Do not change them until they can no longer serve any useful purpose.
Now we shall focus on trousers. You will need six of these. 2 pairs of jeans, Preferably Mens Tommy Hilfiger Jeans from www.ejmenswear.com/men/tommy-hilfiger/jeans, will be required here. 1 black, one blue or two blacks and two blues it really makes no difference. You will also need two pairs of work trousers and finally two informal trousers like cargo pants, walking trousers or chinos. 2-3 jumpers or Hoodies and a Coat make the final part.
In terms of underwear, socks and underpants etc you can have as many of these as you like but you should have one for every day of the week so basically 7 pairs of each. And that in essence is a capsule wardrobe for everything that you would need to see you through the working week and the playful weekend. The idea is to have at least two or three ties and many capsule wardrobes to allow you to fit in watches and jewellery and other personal effects that you may have. This will allow space in your room for other items such as gym equipment weights or maybe even a mini fridge.
